PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Caldwell College senior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) became the program's first player with 1,000 career kills as the Cougars split two matches at the Pace University Tournament Friday at the Goldstein Recreation Center. Caldwell lost to Texas A&M International in five sets before beating Franklin Pierce University in four sets to improve to 8-7.
The milestone kill came in the first set against Franklin Pierce, giving Caldwell a 16-11 lead en route to a 25-18 win. McDonough, who registered her 1,000th career dig earlier this season, is the first Cougar to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. She ended up leading her team to victory with 17 kills and 17 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Freshman outside hitter Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) also had a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs, while junior setter Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) delivered 44 assists in the win. The Ravens' Natasha Ray led all players with 20 kills.
Against Texas A&M International, Caldwell took a 7-3 lead in the final set and had three match points. But the Dust Devils fought back and outlasted the Cougars, 19-17. DiLeonardo led Caldwell with 17 kills, and McDonough added 14 kills, leaving her one kill shy of the milestone. Senior right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) and sophomore Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) each had 10 kills. Roth recorded a career-best 50 assists, while sophomore libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) notched 30 digs.
Caldwell plays a tri-match at the University of the Sciences on Saturday, Sept. 22, facing the host Devils at 11:00 a.m. and Southern Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
