CALDWELL, N.J. – Sophomore defender Lauren Iuliucci (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) found the net twice off corner kicks to lift the Caldwell College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win is the third in a row for the Cougars, who are now 3-2 on the season. The Spartans drop to 1-1.
St. Thomas Aquinas struck first with a goal from Nicole Eisenhauer in the 23rd minute to take the early lead. In the 36th minute, Caldwell pulled even when freshman forward Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) headed the ball on to sophomore forward Megan Ferrara (Clifton, NJ/Clifton), who dribbled into the penalty area and scored. Seconds before halftime, junior midfielder Carissa Strye (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) laced a corner kick towards the box near the goal. Iuliucci deflected the ball with her first touch just inside the far post for a 2-1 lead. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Strye and Iuliucci connected again on a corner kick in the 63rd minute, scoring a nearly identical goal to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage. The lead proved too much to overcome for the Spartans, who were unable to generate much offense in the second half. For Strye, the two-assist performance came in her first game back following an injury that had sidelined her since the season opener.
Sophomore goalkeeper Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) made one save for her first victory of the season. Avaree Rainford notched seven saves in goal for the Spartans, who were out-shot 21-3 for the game.
Caldwell takes on LIU Post on Saturday, Sept. 15 in a non-conference game at 12:00 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
