CALDWELL, N.J. - A desperation shot by junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) at the end of regulation forced overtime, where the Caldwell College women's basketball team earned a 71-62 triumph over visiting Post University Thursday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory gives the Cougars a 13-9 record overall, including a 10-5 mark in league play. The Eagles fall to 6-16, 4-1 CACC.
With the game tied at 55-55, Post's Kelli Reynolds drove to the basket and was fouled with 2.9 seconds on the clock. Reynolds made both free throws for a 57-55 lead. On the ensuing inbounds play, freshman forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) heaved a long pass from the baseline that found Jones near the foul line. With a defender covering her, Jones leaned into an 18-foot jumper that went in as the horn sounded, sending the game into overtime with the score tied at 57-57.
The Cougars took advantage of their second life, outscoring the Eagles 14-5 in the extra period. Jones kept the hot hand with nine points in overtime, as Caldwell ended a two-game losing streak and kept pace with Dominican College, which is a half-game ahead of the Cougars for second place in the CACC North Division.
Post took a 28-27 halftime lead and built its advantage up to 39-31 with 14:46 left in the second half. Caldwell battled back to tie the score at 44-44 on a conventional three-point play by sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) at the 7:36 mark. Back-to-back baskets by senior guard Willeen Capehart (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and Anderson gave the Cougars their first lead of the second half, 50-49 with three minutes left.
But the Eagles continued to score, getting threes from Aubrey Latham and Casey Brooks to lead 55-52 with 1:47 remaining. Senior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) came through for Caldwell with a three-pointer at the one-minute mark that tied the score at 55-55, setting up Jones' improbably finish.
Anderson led all players with 23 points and 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Jones ended up with 18 points, three assists and three steals, while junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) added 10 points and six boards. Latham led Post with 22 points in the loss.
Next up for Caldwell is a CACC contest at Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, Feb. 11. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
