Cougars Handle Tigers in Men's Hoops, 85-55

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team picked up a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Holy Family University, 85-55 Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center. With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in league play, while the Tigers drop to 10-10, 6-6 CACC.

Caldwell took control of the game with a 16-5 run that started with back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard Anthony Gill (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) and freshman guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep), and ended with two threes from freshman guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) for a 27-18 lead. Polk closed out the half with a three-pointer that gave the Cougars a 45-30 advantage at the half. The freshman hit 4-of-5 from long range to lead Caldwell with 16 points in the first half.

After baskets by Walker and senior guard Nik Otovic (Kraljevo, Serbia) made it a 19-point lead, the Tigers scored the next six points to cut the lead to 49-36 with 16 minutes to play. But the Cougars regained momentum with an 11-2 run for a commanding 62-40 bulge at the 12:18 mark. Holy Family never came within 20 points the rest of the way, as Caldwell wrapped up its second straight win over a CACC South Division opponent, following last Saturday's victory over Philadelphia University.

Polk led the Cougars with 18 points in 19 minutes off the bench. His performance helped Caldwell's reserves outscore the Tigers' bench 49-7. The Cougars shot 50.7 percent from the field and matched its season high of 12 three-pointers for the game.

Otovic finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while freshman forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) tallied 12 points and 10 boards for his fourth double-double of the season. Walker dished out a career-best eight assists to go with eight points and five rebounds. Khiry Hankins led the Tigers with 14 points.

Caldwell continues CACC play with a home game against Post University on Thursday, Feb. 9. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
