Cougars Put Away Nyack in Men's Basketball, 95-76

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team shot 71.4 percent from the field in the second half to run away from Nyack College, 95-76 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday evening at Bowman Gymnasium. The Cougars are now 13-11 overall and 8-9 in league play, while the Warriors fall to 0-25, 0-15 CACC.

Nyack used a 13-5 run that included three three-pointers from Chris Hampton to take a 28-21 lead with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Caldwell responded by out-scoring the Warriors 20-10 the rest of the half, getting 10 points from junior forward Arthur Morrison (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) to go into halftime with a 41-38 lead. Hampton tallied 19 points in the first half, with the Cougars shooting 51.5 percent from the floor to take the three-point advantage.

Six points from Morrison and three-pointers by senior guards Nikola Otovic (Kraljevo, Serbia) and Anthony Gill (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) helped Caldwell extend its lead to 55-43 with 16:45 to play. The Warriors did not go away, cutting the deficit to 63-60 midway through the second half. The lead was 70-65 with 7:22 remaining when Caldwell reeled off a 20-5 run to take an insurmountable 90-70 advantage with three minutes left. Otovic hit two threes and score 10 points in the run, as the Cougars kept their playoff hopes alive with the victory.

Caldwell ended up making 20-of-28 (71.4 percent) from the field in the second half, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Cougars also held a healthy 49-31 rebounding edge while limiting the Warriors to 38.8 percent shooting for the game.

Morrison ended up with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Cougars, while Otovic tallied 18 points, seven boards and three assists. Morrison and Otovic were two of six Cougars to score in double figures, as senior center Peter Diffley (Bellerose, NY/Episcopal) had 13 points, freshmen Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) and Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) recorded 12 points apiece, and freshman guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) had 10 points and six assists. Gill dished out a game-high seven assists in the win. Hampton finished with 30 points to lead Nyack.

Caldwell wraps up CACC play on Thursday, Feb. 16 with a home game against Dominican College. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
