Caldwell Women’s Basketball Tipped by Goldey-Beacom, 55-53

Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. - A late basket with 5.8 seconds on the clock allowed Goldey-Beacom College to defeat the Caldwell College women's basketball team, 55-53 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Jones Center. The result drops the Cougars to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Lightning improve to 6-5, 3-1 CACC.

With the game tied at 53-53, Devonne Richardson drove into the lane from the right and converted a lay-up in traffic for a 55-53 lead. On Caldwell's final possession, freshman guard Fahime Farzanessa (Cologne, Germany/Humboldt) received a long inbounds pass from sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and dribbled towards the basket. She appeared to draw contact as her lay-up attempt was off the mark, but no foul was called as time expired.

The exciting finish marked a stark turnaround from the first half, as both teams struggled to find the basket during the game's first 20 minutes. Caldwell took a 21-18 lead at the break despite making 7-of-34 from the field compared to 7-of-28 for the host Lightning.

The Cougars held onto the lead early in the second half, then used a three-pointer by freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) to spark a 9-0 run for a 42-32 advantage midway through the period. Goldey-Beacom responded by scoring the next nine points in a 15-2 run that ended with the Lightning leading 47-44 with 5:26 left to play. Another three by Angelo knotted the score at 49-49 at the four-minute mark.

After the teams exchanged baskets, Richardson scored with 1:22 on the clock for a 53-51 Lightning edge. Following empty possessions by both teams, senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left, setting up Richardson's winning shot.

Jones finished with a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds, while Angelo and junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) each tallied eight points. Caswell grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go with six points and two steals. Richardson ended up with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Ashley Rosario came off the bench to score 17 points for Goldey-Beacom.

The Cougars host Queens College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 12, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
