Cougars Fall to Dominican in CACC Women's Basketball Opener

Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener to Dominican College, 73-57 Wednesday night in the Hennessy Center. Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored 31 points for the Cougars, who are now 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Lady Chargers improve to 4-3, 2-0 CACC with the win.

Jones tallied the Cougars' first nine points and helped Caldwell take an 18-14 lead midway through the first half. Dominican closed out the half with a 7-2 run for a narrow 27-25 advantage at the break. Jones went 4-of-6 from the field en route to 13 first-half points, while LaShonda Hathorne had 10 points for the Lady Chargers.

A pair of three-pointers by Lindsey Lopez sparked a 12-2 Dominican run over the first four minutes of the second half to leap ahead, 39-27. The lead grew to 57-44 with seven minutes to play before Caldwell used an 8-1 run, capped by a basket from junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English), that brought the Cougars to within six, 58-52 at the five-minute mark. But a three by Shannon Lavelle and another from Lopez allowed the Lady Chargers to close out the game with a 15-5 run.

Jones, who had 18 points in the second half, hit all 14 of her free throws and was 8-of-13 from the floor for the game. Anderson ended up with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dished out five assists. Lopez paced Dominican with 18 points, as the Lady Chargers shot 61.5 percent from the field in the second half, including 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Caldwell hosts Georgian Court University on Saturday, Dec. 1. The CACC contest starts at 4:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
