Women's Basketball Loses to Warriors at ESU Tourney

Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team opened play at the East Stroudsburg Tournament by falling to the host Warriors, 70-55 Saturday night at Koehler Fieldhouse. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 1-6 on the season, while ESU improves to 1-1.

The Warriors gained the upper hand late in the first half, out-scoring Caldwell 16-8 over the final seven minutes to take a 41-35 halftime lead. East Stroudsburg made five threes in the half compared to one for the Cougars, and shot 51.5 percent from the field.

A lay-up from junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) helped the Cougars pull to within four, 47-43 with 14:13 to play. But the Warriors put together an 18-5 run with four three-pointers, including two from Barb Borst, for a 65-48 advantage with 6:49 remaining. For the game East Stroudsburg made 11 of its 17 attempts from three-point range, while holding Caldwell to six field goals in the second half.

Anderson, who scored 14 points in the first half, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double in seven games this season. Senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) contributed 11 points, three assists and three steals, while senior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) had nine rebounds to go with five points and two blocks. ESU was led by Andrea Verdes with 19 points, including five threes, and Jessica Martin with 14 points, 12 boards, five blocks and four steals.

Caldwell wraps up play at the East Stroudsburg Tournament with a game against Virginia Union University on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
