Late Basket Tips Caldwell in Women's Basketball

Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. - A basket by Marie Biondi with three seconds left allowed the University of Bridgeport to defeat the Caldwell College women's basketball team, 60-58 in a non-conference game Monday night in the George R. Newman Center. The loss came in the home opener for the Cougars, who are now 1-5 on the season. The Purple Knights remain unbeaten at 4-0 with the win.

Caldwell trailed 58-52 with less than two minutes remaining when sophomore guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) drained a three-pointer to pull Caldwell to within three with 1:26 on the clock. Bridgeport then missed the front end of a one-and-one, and senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) made them pay, burying a three to tie the game at 58-58 with 30 seconds left. Bridgeport took the clock down to under 10 seconds, then Aziza Patterson drove and put up a shot that was off the mark. Biondi grabbed the rebound, and her put-back was good for the go-ahead basket with three seconds remaining. Caldwell was unable to get off a shot and fell for the fifth straight game.

The game was close throughout, with 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) and sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) each scored 12 points in the first half, as the Cougars took a 30-28 lead at halftime. The game went back and forth in the second half, as the Cougars used a basket by senior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and a three from Jones to take a 47-44 lead with 8:32 left. But the Purple Knights battled back, eventually using an 8-1 run to take the largest lead of the game, 58-52 with under two minutes to play.

Anderson led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds, including nine boards on the offensive glass. Caswell also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jones finished with 10 points. Priscilla Dodoo scored 22 points and Tanisha Carter had 20 points and 10 rebounds, as Bridgeport scored 27 points off 24 Caldwell turnovers, and shot 50.0 percent from the field in the second half.

The Cougars will play in the East Stroudsburg Tournament this weekend, facing the host Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 5:00 p.m. before taking on Virginia Union on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
