Caldwell Women's Basketball Edged by Assumption in OT

Box Score EASTON, Mass. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team battled Assumption College into overtime, eventually falling 64-60 in the first game of the Stonehill Tournament Friday night at Merkert Gymnasium. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-3 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 2-0.

Caldwell erased a seven-point deficit late in the second half with a 14-4 run to take a 57-54 lead with 2:43 remaining. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scored eight points in the run, while freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) hit two three-pointers. The lead was still three points with a minute left in regulation when Gabrielle Gibson made two free throws to make the score 57-56 Caldwell. After a missed shot, the Cougars fouled Gibson, sending her to the line with 14 seconds on the clock. Gibson missed her first attempt, then made the second to tie the game at 57-57. The Cougars' shot attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

Caldwell managed just three points in the extra session, as the Greyhounds received four points from Gibson and three from Katy Howard to earn the victory. The Cougars made 1-of-6 from the field in overtime and shot 36.8 percent from the field for the game.

Assumption took a 36-30 lead at halftime after closing out the first half with an 18-6 run. Caldwell came back to tie the score at 41-41 at the 13:43 mark, only to have the Greyhounds score the next seven points for a 48-41 advantage with 8:17 left in regulation.

Anderson recorded her third double-double in four games this season with 26 points and 15 rebounds while shooting 12-of-18 from the floor. Angelo ended up with 13 points, and senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) contributed 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Senior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) helped Caldwel hold a 47-42 rebounding edge with 12 boards. Howard paced Assumption with 14 points and six rebounds.

Caldwell takes on the host Skyhawks at the Stonehill Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 17, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium.
