Caldwell Defeats UDC in Women's Hoops Opener, 77-64

Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team started the 2012-13 season with an impressive 77-64 victory over the University of the District of Columbia at the St. Thomas Aquinas Classic Friday night in Aquinas Hall. The Cougars were 17-11 last season, while the Firebirds went 21-7 and advanced to the NCAA Division II East Regional in 2011-12.

Caldwell led for most of the first half, using a 14-3 run to lead 31-18 with seven minutes left in the half. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scored 15 points as the Cougars took a 38-31 lead at the half. UDC pulled to within four early in the second half, but Caldwell reeled off an 18-6 spree to take control of the game, 58-42 with 13 minutes remaining. Sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) each score five points in the run.

The bulge grew to as many as 20 points before the Firebirds scored 11 of the game's final 15 points. The Cougars improved their accuracy from the field in the second half, making 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) compared to 12-of-37 (32.4 percent) for UDC. Caldwell also got to the free throw line 35 times in the game, with the Firebirds earning 17 trips to the foul line.

Anderson led all players with 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting, 10 rebounds and three steals, while senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) tallied 18 points, including three three-pointers. Caswell finished with 12 points, nine boards and three steals, and sophomore guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) had seven assists. Taj Baldwin-Kollore led the Firebirds with 12 points.

The Cougars complete play at the St. Thomas Aquinas Tournament with a game against the host Spartans on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
