Caldwell Volleyball Edged by Dominican in Five Sets

Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College volleyball team lost a tight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match to visiting Dominican College in five sets Friday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who lost by the scores of 24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8, are now 19-11 overall and 12-4 in the conference. The Lady Chargers (20-7) remain unbeaten in the CACC at 16-0.

Caldwell won the first set 26-24 behind four kills from freshman outside hitter Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame). But Dominican took control of the match by winning the next two sets, out-hitting the Cougars .237 to .097. Junior middle blocker Kasey Bausch (Bellmore, NY/Holy Trinity) helped the Cougars stay alive with five kills on five swings in the fourth set, setting up a showdown in the fifth set.

Dominican jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final period, but the Cougars came back to tie the score at 5-5 on kills by senior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline), sophomore Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) and Bausch. But the Lady Chargers scored six of the next seven points to take an 11-6 advantage en route to a 15-8 victory. Dominican had 11 kills and a .417 hitting percentage in the fifth set.

Bausch led Caldwell with a career-high 15 kills against three errors in 33 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage. McDonough had 14 kills and a team-best 20 digs, and DiLeonardo added 13 kills and 16 digs. Junior setter Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) delivered 48 assists and had 17 digs. Tori Dexter paced Dominican with 15 kills and 16 digs.

Caldwell plays its final regular-season home match on Saturday, Oct. 27 against Holy Family University. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. in the Newman Center.
