NEWARK, Del. – The Caldwell College volleyball team fell to Wilmington University in five sets in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. The loss ends the Cougars' nine-match winning streak and leaves with an overall record of 18-10, including an 11-3 mark in league play. The Wildcats (23-4) remain unbeaten in the CACC at 15-0.
Caldwell won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-19, getting 11 kills from freshman outside hitter Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) over the two wins. Wilmington came back to take the next two sets, 25-14 and 25-15 to force a decisive fifth set. In the final set, the Wildcats built a 10-7 lead and had set point at 14-10. But the Cougars fought back, recording the next four points and getting two kills from senior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) to tie the score at 14-14. After Nicole Wiechecki put Wilmington ahead 15-14 with a kill, Katie Shorter ended the match with a kill for a 16-14 win.
McDonough and DiLeonardo paced Caldwell with 18 kills apiece, while McDonough added 21 digs for her ninth straight double-double. Senior right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive), who notched her 1,000th career kill in last night's 3-1 victory over Nyack College, had nine kills. Junior setter Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) delivered a career-high 53 assists to go with 13 digs, and sophomore libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) tallied a match-high 25 digs. Shorter led Wilmington with 15 kills and nine total blocks.
The Cougars play a CACC match at Felician College on Tuesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Lodi, N.J.
