CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) recorded her 1,000th career kill as the Caldwell College volleyball team defeated Nyack College, 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Friday night in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the Cougars' ninth in a row and gives them an overall record of 18-9, including an 11-2 mark in the conference. The Warriors are now 10-11, 7-7 CACC.
Mosher, who had 988 kills entering the match, reached the milestone late in the fourth set to give Caldwell a 22-14 lead. A three-time all-CACC first team selection, Mosher joins senior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) as the only Caldwell volleyball players to reach 1,000 kills in a career.
The Cougars also wore pink before and during the match in support of breast cancer awareness. The volleyball team, together with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), raised funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure by collecting donations and having a serving contest between the second and third sets.
The Cougars started strong, hitting .367 in the first set en route to a 25-16 win. McDonough led the way with six kills. After cruising to a 25-17 win in the second set behind three kills apiece from McDonough and junior setter Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field), Caldwell was unable to finish off the Warriors in the third set. Trailing for most of the set, the Cougars battled back to take a 23-22 lead on Mosher's 998th career kill. But Nyack scored the final three points, including two kills from Debbie Schendel, for the 25-23 win.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Cougars took control and the lead on their way to a 25-14 triumph. Caldwell hit .202 for the match compared to .065 for Nyack and had an 88-78 advantage in digs.
McDonough led all players with 13 kills and a career-high 31 digs. Mosher finished with 12 kills, while freshman outside hitter Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) added nine kills. Roth registered 41 assists, seven kills and nine digs, while sophomore Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) had 23 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Susan Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) also had four service aces. Samantha Garza led Nyack with 12 kills.
Caldwell plays a key CACC match at Wilmington University on Saturday, Oct. 20. The first serve is set for 12:00 p.m. in New Castle, Del.
