Caldwell Tops Felician for Ninth Straight Win, 70-68

CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/ Cumberland ) registered 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Felician College, 70-68 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Monday night in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the ninth in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Golden Falcons drop to 7-7, 4-3 CACC.

Neither team led by more than three points for most of the first half until the Cougars ended the period with a 10-3 run to take a 34-28 lead at the break. Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.), who ended the half with a three-pointer, scored 11 points to lead Caldwell, which made 48.1 percent of its field goal attempts before halftime.

The Cougars maintained control of the game into the second half, building the lead to 57-46 with 7:44 remaining. But a 15-5 spree, sparked by 11 points from Destiny Barnette, allowed Felician to pull to within one, 62-61 with 2:31 on the clock. A three-pointer from freshman guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and four points from Jones made the score 69-63 with 31 seconds left. Following a Golden Falcons basket, the Cougars missed two free throws and Barnette hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 2.1 seconds to play. But Jones was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the line, and Felician was unable to get off a shot before the final buzzer.

Caldwell connected on four three-pointers and made 16 free throws compared to seven for Felician. The ninth straight victory ties the program's record for the longest winning streak, set during the 1996-97 season and matched last year.

Lambert went 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the line en route to a season-high 19 points. Her 13 rebounds are a career high and helped the Cougars hold a 51-46 edge on the glass. Jones finished with 18 points and six assists, while sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) had 10 points and six boards. Barnette led all players with 29 points, and Que Lyles tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds for Felician.

Next up for Caldwell is a CACC contest at Bloomfield College on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
