Cougars Hold off Wilmington in Women’s Basketball, 56-50

CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored six of her game-high 19 points in the final minute to lead the Caldwell College women's basketball team to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Wilmington University, 56-50 Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the eighth in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Wildcats drop their ninth consecutive game to fall to 1-10, 0-6 CACC.

With Caldwell clinging to a 50-48 lead with a minute remaining, Jones made a lay-up with 44 seconds left for a 52-48 advantage. Following a basket by Candace Phrance, Jones was fouled and made the ensuing free throws to restore the Cougars' four-point lead. On their next possession, the Wildcats missed two lay-ups, and Jones hit two more foul shots to wrap up the 56-50 win.

The first half was close, with six ties and nine lead changes. Caldwell struggled to score in the first half, shooting 30.6 percent from the field, including 1-of-10 from three-point range. Wilmington, which shot 36.7 percent from the floor and hit three three-pointers, took a 27-26 lead into the break.

A pair of baskets by junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) sparked a 10-2 Caldwell run for a 36-29 lead early in the second half. But the Wildcats answered by scoring the next nine points to regain the upper hand, 38-36 midway through the half. Jones responded for the Cougars by draining three three-pointers to put the hosts back on top by six, 45-39 at the seven-minute mark. Wilmington came within two points three times the rest of the way, but Caldwell leaned on Jones down the stretch to capture the team's eighth consecutive victory.

Jones, who was honored before the game for reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career earlier this season, finished with 19 points and four rebounds. Felix finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while senior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) registered 10 points, nine boards, three blocks and two steals. Erin Moore paced the Wildcats with 17 points.

Caldwell hosts its third straight CACC home game on Monday, Jan. 9, as the Cougars take on Felician College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
