Caldwell Women's Basketball Edged by Devils on the Road, 53-50

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to the University of the Sciences, 53-50 Saturday afternoon at Morgan Arena. The loss gives the Cougars a 10-7 record on the season, including a 7-3 mark in the conference. The Devils improve to 9-7, 5-3 CACC.

A three-pointer by junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) with 16 seconds remaining tied the score at 50-50. On the next possession, USciences' Becca Ruggear scored on a lay-up and was fouled with just seven seconds on the clock. After Ruggear made the ensuing free throw for a 53-50 lead, the Cougars were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half, as the score was tied 24-24 at halftime. Six points from Jones sparked an 8-0 Caldwell run for a 32-27 advantage three minutes and 30 seconds into the second half. Later in the half, the Devils scored 10 straight points to take the upper hand, 43-38 with seven minutes to play. With Caldwell trailing by six with just three minutes remaining, three-pointers by Jones started and ended a 10-4 spree that tied the game at 50-50. But the Cougars could not prevent Ruggear and the Devils from handing them their second conference loss in a row.

Jones led Caldwell with 14 points, while sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) and junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) each gathered in a team-best eight rebounds. Ruggear paced the Devils with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cougars continue CACC play on Tuesday, Jan. 24 with a home game against Nyack College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
