CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team survived a couple of close sets to defeat Post University, 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match of the season Wednesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The victory gives the Cougars a 4-0 record on the season, while the Eagles remain winless at 0-5.
Caldwell held the upper hand for most of the first set and led 16-7 before Post scored 11 of the next 15 points to pull to within two, 20-18. Senior setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) recorded a kill on the next play, then served the next four points, capped off by a kill from junior right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive), to give Caldwell a 25-19 win. In the second set, it was the Cougars who had to come from behind, as the Eagles grabbed a 16-9 advantage. Caldwell battled back to tie the set at 19-19, and eventually took control for a 25-20 victory. The Cougars tallied eight of the final nine points in the set.
The final set saw Caldwell score the first seven points en route to a 20-8 lead before earning a 25-13 win and the sweep. Sophomore middle blocker Becca Feczer (Findlay, OH/Findlay) had four of Caldwell's 16 kills in the set, with junior Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) and freshman Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) each delivering three kills.
McDonough, pictured, led all players with 11 kills, followed by Nestoras with seven. The two outside hitters also tallied nine digs apiece to pace the defense. Roth finished with 24 assists and five kills without an error in seven attempts (.714). Belinda Snider led Post with nine kills.
Next up for Caldwell is another CACC match when Felician College visits the Newman Center on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
