BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Caldwell College volleyball team lost a non-conference match to the University of Bridgeport 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Hubbell Gym. The loss is the first of the season for the Cougars, who are now 9-1 on the season. The Purple Knights improve to 6-1 with the win.
Caldwell led 16-12 in the first set before surrendering the lead and falling 25-23 despite six kills from junior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline). After losing the second set 25-11, the Cougars opened the third set with a 9-3 lead and led 18-14 later in the set. But Bridgeport eventually took a 22-21 advantage before Caldwell tied the set at 23-23. Back-to-back hitting errors by the Cougars allowed the Purple Knights to take the set and the match.
McDonough finished with a match-high 14 kills to go with 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Junior right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mt. St. Olive) added nine kills and two blocks, while senior setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay), left, registered 30 assists. Junior Maddy Amon (Louisville, KY/Bishop Moore) also had 10 digs. Biljana Savic recorded 10 kills to lead Bridgeport, which hit .389 for the match compared to .137 for Caldwell.
The Cougars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match against Wilmington University. The first serve is set for 12:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
