ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team kicked off the 2011 season with a loss to Assumption College, 4-1, at the Nyack College Tournament Friday afternoon at the Orangetown Soccer Complex. The Cougars went 10-8 last season, while the Greyhounds, who play in the Northeast-10 Conference, went 4-11-2 a year ago.
Assumption tallied the first goal of the game just 81 seconds before halftime, when Erin Kinback found the net off an assist from Elizabeth Blasser. Caldwell responded in the second half with a strong effort, culminating in a goal by sophomore midfielder Rebecca Nadeau (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.). Nadeau, pictured, received a pass from sophomore forward Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) and blasted a shot from the right sideline that went over goalkeeper Allison Bruder and into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cougars continued to hold the upper hand until Nicole Savi scored on a counter attack from the left side in the 71st minute for a 2-1 Greyhound lead. Caldwell never recovered, surrendering goals 82nd and 86th minutes to Katie Lydon and Kelsie Imondi, respectively.
Junior goalkeeper Kristina Cabales (East Islip, NY/Islip Terrace) made four saves in goal for the Cougars, while Bruder finished with six saves for Assumption.
Caldwell wraps up play at the Nyack Tournament with a game against another Northeast-10 foe in Stonehill College on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Orangetown Soccer Complex.
