PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) matched her career high with 30 points to go with 11 rebounds, as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Philadelphia University, 78-65 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Athletic Center. The Cougars are now 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the conference, while the Rams drop to 11-9, 7-6 CACC.
Two three-pointers by sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) in the game's first three minutes helped the Cougars get out to a fast start, jumping out to an 18-4 lead at the 12-minute mark. The lead remained 14 points near the end of the half until the Rams' Kate Brennan hit a three-pointer with 23 seconds left to make the halftime score 42-31 Caldwell. Anderson came off the bench to score 14 points in the first half, as the Cougars shot 45.2 percent from the floor while holding the Rams to 38.2 percent shooting.
Following a basket by Brennan in the first minute of the second half, Caldwell reeled off a 15-4 run, sparked by two threes from Jones and another by junior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial), that gave the Cougars a commanding 57-37 lead with 12:23 left in the game. The Rams continued to battle, putting together an 20-8 run to pull within eight points, 65-57 with just under five minutes to play. But they would get no closer, as Anderson scored the next three Caldwell baskets to help the Cougars wrap up their 10th conference victory. Caldwell made 54.2 percent from the field in the second half, and dominated the boards for the game with a 55-31 rebounding advantage.
Anderson, who also had 30 points in a win over Georgian Court University on Jan. 8, made a career-high 14 field goals in 21 attempts (66.7 percent) and grabbed 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Jones finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while senior guard Abena George (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) recorded six points, nine rebounds and four assists in the win. Brennan led the Rams with 12 points, and Christine Wooding added 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
Caldwell, which is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II East Region, plays at Dominican College on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
