Caldwell Women’s Hoops Snaps Skid with 79-67 Win over Bloomfield

CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored 23 points as the Caldwell College women's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 79-67 victory over Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win gives the Cougars a 1-1 mark in league play and a 2-5 record on the season, while the Lady Deacons fall to 1-3, 0-1 CACC.

Bloomfield took control early, starting the game with an 11-0 run and leading by as many as 13 points in the first nine minutes of the game. With the score 23-10, Caldwell answered with a 13-0 run of their own, including eight points from Jones, to tie the score at 23-23. The game was still tied, 29-29 with four minutes left in the half when a pair of threes by senior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) helped the Cougars close out the half with an 8-1 spree to take a 37-30 lead at the break.

Caldwell built its lead up to nine points, 58-49 midway through the second half before the Lady Deacons used a 12-5 run to pull to within two, 63-61 with five minutes remaining. A conventional three-point play from freshman forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) led to seven straight points that restored the Cougars' nine-point lead with under four minutes to play. Bloomfield never came closer than seven points the rest of the way, as Caldwell led by as many as 14 points down the stretch to clinch the win.

The Cougars shot a season-high 52.0 percent from the field and made 20-of-22 (90.9 percent) from the free throw line in the win. Jones hit 4-of-7 from three-point range en route to a season-high 23 points to go with three steals. The performance left her five points shy of the 1,000-point milestone for her career at Caldwell. Sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) notched her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while junior center Gililan Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) added 13 points, five boards and three blocks. Ivettlis Castro led Bloomfield with 22 points.

Caldwell returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 with a CACC game at Felician College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
