Caldwell Women’s Basketball Tops Queens on the Road, 71-56

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game, defeating Queens College 71-56 in a non-conference game Monday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Cougars improve to 7-5 with the victory, while the Knights drop to 1-9.

Caldwell erased an early five-point deficit with a 20-5 run, sparked by nine points from freshman forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School), to lead 25-15 seven minutes before halftime. The lead grew to as many as 15 points before the Cougars took a 38-24 advantage into the break. Caldwell held the Knights to 24.2 percent shooting from the field, while Caswell led the way offensively with 11 points in the half.

Queens was able to come as close as 11 points three different times, but the Cougars put the game away with a 21-6 spree that made the score 66-40 Caldwell with 6:39 to play. Again it was Caswell who ignited the run with seven points. The Knights closed out the game with a 12-1 run, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Cougars from extending their winning streak to six games.

Caswell made 7-of-8 from the floor en route to career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds. She also swiped three steals to match her personal best. Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) and sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) each scored nine points, with Jones dishing out seven assists. Freshman guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) contributed six assists. For Queens, Catherine Pastor recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the loss.

Caldwell returns to action on Jan. 5 with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference home game against Concordia College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
