ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team made a late charge but came up short in a 53-48 loss to Dominican College in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the year for both teams Wednesday night in the Hennessy Center. The defeat is the fifth in a row for the Cougars, who drop to 1-5 on the season. The Chargers are now 1-4 overall with the win.
Dominican led by as many as 14 points in the first half before taking a 34-24 lead at the break. Twenty of the Chargers' 34 first-half points came off of turnovers, as Caldwell committed 16 miscues in the game's first 20 minutes.
The deficit grew to 14 again, 45-31 with 7:37 remaining before the Cougars made a push to get back in the game. Sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) scored six points in an 8-0 run that made the score 45-39 with just over three minutes to play. Following a three-pointer by Lindsey Lopez, junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) hit a free throw and a three-pointer to make it a five-point game, 48-43 with 1:10 left. Caldwell came within three points one more time, but the Chargers made 3-of-4 from the line down the stretch to clinch the win.
Anderson led all players with 19 points to go with 13 rebounds and three blocks. Junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) also grabbed 13 boards and added nine points and five blocks. Dominican was led by Bianca Harris, who had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cougars continue CACC play with a home game against Bloomfield College on Saturday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
