WORCESTER, Mass. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Assumption College, 68-57 at the Assumption Tournament Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Greyhounds remain unbeaten at 4-0.
Assumption took control early and never looked back, holding Caldwell to 16 points and six field goals in the first half en route to a 39-16 halftime advantage. The lead grew to as many as 26 points in the second half before the Cougars made a late push fueled by junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.). Jones hit three three-pointers in the final 2:22 of the game to bring Caldwell withing eight with 30 seconds left. But the flurry came too late, as the Cougars lost for the second time at the Assumption Tournament.
Jones recorded her second 20-point performance of the weekend to earn all-tournament honors. Junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), pictured, notched 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocks, while sophomore forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) had 11 points and eight boards. Assumption's Gabrielle Gibson led all players with 23 points, and Kelly Meredith grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.
Caldwell plays C.W. Post on Saturday, Nov. 26 at the Dowling Tournament. The game starts at 2:00 p.m. in Oakdale, N.Y.
