WORCESTER, Mass. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost a close game with Stonehill College, 55-50 at the Assumption Tournament Friday night at Laska Gymnasium. The loss is the first of the season for the Cougars (1-1), while the Skyhawks improve to 2-1.
In the first half Caldwell broke a 13-13 tie with a 16-4 run that put the Cougars on top 29-17 with 2:15 left in the half. Junior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) struck for 11 points in the run, which was snapped by a three from Amy Pelletier. Following another Stonehill basket, senior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) drained a three-pointer before the end of the half to give Caldwell a 32-22 advantage at the break. Jones tallied 15 points in the first period, as the Cougars shot 46.7 percent from the field compared to 29.6 percent for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill got back into the game by scoring the first six points of the second half to pull to within four, 32-28. Following a basket by Jones and a pair of free throws from junior center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) that made the score 36-28 Caldwell, the Skyhawks used a 13-4 run to take a 41-40 lead with 9:26 remaining. Stonehill maintained control, building the lead to as many as nine points following back-to-back threes by Pelletier and Jamie Panton at the 3:40 mark. The Cougars came as close as five points down the stretch, as Stonehill held on to defeat Caldwell for the second year in a row.
Jones, pictured, ended up with a game-high 20 points to go with six assists in the loss. Freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards, while Cadet and Felix each finished with eight points. Pelletier paced Stonehill with 19 points.
Caldwell wraps up play at the Assumption Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 19 with a game against the host Greyhounds at 3:30 p.m.
