BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Junior outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) tallied a career-high 26 kills as the Caldwell College volleyball team defeated Bloomfield College, 25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Tuesday night at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. The Cougars end the regular season with a record of 23-4, including an 18-1 mark in conference play for the most CACC wins in the program's history. The Lady Deacons fall to 8-16, 6-13 CACC with the loss.
Caldwell set the tone in the first set, hitting .281 en route to a 25-16 win. In the second set, the Cougars turned a 7-6 deficit into a 17-7 lead, with freshman outside hitter Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) serving 11 times in a row. McDonough had 10 kills and no errors in 13 attempts (.769) in the 25-17 victory. Bloomfield stayed alive in the third set with a 25-21 win, but the Cougars put away 21 kills in the fourth set to clinch the match. McDonough again had 10 kills in the set to lead the way.
For the match, McDonough hit .477, with 26 kills and five errors in 44 attempts. She also added nine digs and two blocks on defense. Sophomore middle blocker Kasey Bausch (Bellmore, NY/Holy Trinity) contributed 11 kills, while senior setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) registered 40 assists. Nestoras ended up with three aces and a team-high 16 digs, and freshman Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) had 13 digs. Bloomfield was led by Clodesh Montano with 10 kills.
Caldwell earned the top seed in the CACC North and will host Chestnut Hill College, the fourth seed in the South, in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament. The match will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
