CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman forward Megan Ferrara (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) tallied the tying goal in the 63rd minute, then scored the game-winner in overtime as the Caldwell College women's soccer team came back to beat Goldey-Beacom College, 3-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Friday afternoon at the Kiwanis Oval. The victory came in the final regular-season game of the year and clinched third place in the CACC for the Cougars (8-7-2 overall, 7-3-2 CACC). The Lightning completes the season at 6-9, 4-8 CACC.
Caldwell fell behind 2-0 in the first half, as Marissa Valladares and Alexandra Smith scored in the 21st and 29th minutes, respectively for Goldey-Beacom. The Lightning maintained the lead until senior forward Giana Scerbo (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) headed home a cross from sophomore midfielder Rebecca Stinger (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) in the 57th minute. Then in the 63rd minute, junior Sarah Royse (Northvale, NJ/Old Tappan) sent a cross from the right side that Ferrara headed off the far post and into the goal to tie the game at 2-2. Both Scerbo and Ferrara scored just seconds after entering the game as substitutions.
Caldwell had some scoring chances before the end of regulation, as sophomore forward Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) hit the post in the 79th minute, and freshman midfielder Ashlee Paknis (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) hit the crossbar in the 87th minute.
Less than three minutes into overtime, Stinger sent the ball into the penalty area to Ferrara, who turned and shot the ball past Lightning goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt and into the goal for the 3-2 victory. The win means the Cougars will host their first CACC Tournament game since 2008.
Freshman goalkeeper Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) recorded five saves in goal for Caldwell, while Degenhardt finished with seven saves for the Lightning. Caldwell out-shot Goldey-Beacom 26-11 and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougars will host the sixth-place team in the first round of the CACC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 1, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
