OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Caldwell College volleyball team picked up a non-conference win with a sweep of New York Institute of Technology, 25-14, 25-11, 25-22 Wednesday night at Recreation Hall. The victory evens the Cougars' record at 2-2, while the Bears are now 1-1.
The Cougars registered 13 kills while holding NYIT to a negative hitting percentage in the first set to cruise to a 25-14 win. Senior outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) led the way with four kills in the set. In the second set, Caldwell broke open a close battle by scoring 13 of the last 14 points for a 25-11 triumph. Sophomore outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) tallied four kills down the stretch. The third and final set remained close, as NYIT tied the score at 20-20. Caldwell closed out the match by scoring its final five points on kills, including two apiece from senior middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) and McDonough. The Cougars notched 19 kills in the third set with a hitting percentage of .271.
Junior setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay), pictured, kept the offense rolling with 38 assists, helping the Cougars hit a .237 for the match. McDonough tallied a team-best 11 kills, while junior middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) had eight kills to go with four total blocks. Defensively, McDonough and sophomore libero Maddy Amon (Louisville, KY/Bishop Moore) each registered 14 digs. Caldwell did not surrender a service ace in the match while recording five offensively.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 with a non-conference match at Pace University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
