CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team beat Georgian Court University, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The win is the Cougars' first over the four-time defending CACC champion Lions in five meetings, and gives Caldwell an 8-3 record overall, including a 5-0 mark in the conference. GCU drops to 2-11, 2-3 CACC.
The Cougars took control of a close first set by scoring eight of the final 10 points to take a 25-17 win. Junior middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) registered five kills with no errors in the set. In the second set, Caldwell had 15 kills and never trailed en route to a 22-14 win. Alao and sophomore right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) each had four kills. The third set was much more competitive, with 10 ties and Georgian Court holding leads of 12-10 and 15-14. But a .355 team hitting percentage for the set, and three kills late in the set by junior Brittany Denter (Grawn, MI/Kingsley), helped Caldwell earn the set and the sweep. The Cougars hit a season-best .337 for the match compared to .141 for the visiting Lions. The win extends the Cougars' winning streak to six.
Alao ended up with a match-high 11 kills to go with a .562 hitting percentage. Mosher finished with seven kills, and senior outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) tallied six kills. Junior setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) recorded 31 assists and five kills, while freshman Tiffany Grupp (St. Louis, MI/St. Louis) tallied seven digs and four service aces. The Lions were led by Brandi Arsenault with seven kills.
