OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Two goals by freshman midfielder Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey) and 13 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Kristina Cabales (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) helped the Caldwell College women's soccer team defeat NYIT, 2-1 in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at President's Stadium. The win gives the Cougars an overall record of 2-3 on the season, while the Bears fall to 4-3.
Caldwell opened the scoring in the 30th minute, when Crankshaw headed a clearance from NYIT goalkeeper Kathryn Miller into the upper left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. The advantage lasted into the second half until Maria Moreno scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute to tie the game at 1-1. With less than five minutes to play, Crankshaw received a pass from senior forward Jackie D'Orsaneo (Bowie, MD/Bowie) and hit a shot from 15 yards out that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the goal. Crankshaw, right, who has two game-winning goals, has scored all four of Caldwell's goals this season.
With NYIT holding a 23-3 advantage in shots, Cabales kept the Cougars in the game with nine saves in the first half and four in the second for a career-high 13 saves. Miller finished with one save for the Bears. The win is Caldwell's first victory over a non-conference opponent since Oct. 9, 2006, when the Cougars beat Queens 3-2.
Next up for Caldwell is a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Dominican College on Wednesday, Sept. 22. The contest is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
