COUGARS BEAT NYACK IN CACC WOMEN'S HOOPS OPENER, 70-56

NYACK, N.Y. - Senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) scored 20 points to lead the Caldwell College women's basketball team to a 70-56 victory over Nyack College Tuesday night at Bowman Gym. The win comes in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest of the season for the Cougars, who are 3-2 overall on the year. The Warriors, who won the CACC Tournament last season, fall to 4-4, 0-1 CACC.

In the first half, Caldwell broke a 19-19 tie by closing out the half with a 10-5 run to take a 29-24 advantage into the break. The Cougars held Nyack to 25.0 percent shooting in the first period while getting nine points from freshman forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) and eight from Leedham, pictured.

A basket by Brianna McKellery allowed the Warriors to cut Caldwell's lead to 37-34 with just over 14 minutes to play. The Cougars answered by scoring the next seven points, including four from Anderson, to make the score 44-34 for the largest lead of the game to that point. Nyack's Victoria Sweet drained a three-pointer to pull the Warriors to within seven, but that's as close as the hosts would get. A three-pointer by junior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) pushed the score to 64-49 with 2:39 on the clock, as the Cougars avenged a loss to Nyack in last year's CACC Tournament quarterfinals.

Leedham, who also dished out four assists, made 8-of-9 from the free throw line en route to her second 20-point game of the season. Anderson turned in her best performance as a collegian, tallying 17 points and 14 rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) added 10 points and six boards in the win. Nyack was led by Sweet with 26 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Sweet, who joined Leedham on last year's all-CACC first team, made nine of the Warriors' 17 field goals on the night.

Caldwell plays another CACC road game on Thursday, Dec. 9, when they play at Bloomfield College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Bloomfield Gymnasium.
