COUGARS TAKE DOWN DOMINICAN IN WOMEN'S HOOPS, 62-54

CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) registered a game-high 21 points to lead the Caldwell College women's basketball team to a 62-54 triumph over visiting Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday night in the George R. Newman Center. The victory improves the Cougars' record to 4-3 on the season, including a 2-1 mark in league play. The Lady Chargers fall to 4-4, 2-1 CACC with the loss.

Caldwell jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the game's first five minutes, with senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) scoring six points. Dominican answered with a 9-0 run, including six points from Bianca Harris, that cut the lead to 15-13. The score remained close the rest of the half, as the Lady Chargers eventually made it a one-point game, 29-28 with 2:17 on the clock. A jumper by Jones before the halftime buzzer sent the Cougars into the break with a 31-28 lead. Jones netted 11 points in the first half, while Meghan Murphy paced Dominican with seven points.

A 10-3 run to start the second half allowed Caldwell to take a 41-31 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play. Dominican used three-pointers by Murphy and Shannon Lavelle to pull to with three, 47-44 with 5:52 remaining. Jones answered for Caldwell with a pair of baskets sandwiched around a Leedham three-pointer that put the Cougars ahead 54-44. The Lady Chargers came within six points with 15 seconds left, but it was not enough as Caldwell earned its third win in its past four games. The Cougars held Dominican to 29.0 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, and out-scored the Lady Chargers from the free throw line 14-6 for the game.

Jones, pictured, went 8-of-15 from the field and added seven rebounds, five assists and four steals in a solid, all-around effort. Leedham chipped in 17 points and five assists, while junior forward Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) had 11 points and four steals. Sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) snared a game-high 10 rebounds to help Caldwell hold a 43-34 edge on the glass. Murphy and Marley Klunk tallied 10 points apiece for Dominican.

Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference game against Virginia Union University on Friday, Dec. 17. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
