EASTON, Mass. - Two free throws with one second remaining proved to be the difference as the Caldwell College women's basketball team fell to Stonehill College, 67-65 in the final game of the Stonehill Classic Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-2 on the season, while the Skyhawks improve to 4-1.
With Stonehill holding a 65-61 lead with 43 seconds left in regulation, two free throws by senior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) made it a two-point game with 18 seconds to play. On the Skyhawks next possession, sophomore guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) stole the ball, and following a timeout, she made a lay-up to tie the game at 65-65 with seven seconds on the clock. With time winding down, a foul was called on Caldwell sophomore center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac), sending Emily Rousseau to the line with one second remaining. Rousseau hit both shots, and Jones' three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, giving Stonehill a 67-65 victory.
The Cougars trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before battling back to take a 31-30 lead into the halftime break. Junior guard Stephanie Cadet (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) and Leedham hit back-to-back three-pointers to close out the half. Caldwell built its lead up to 12, 57-45 with just over eight minutes to play. But Stonehill got back in the game by scoring the next 16 points, including seven by Tania Williams to lead 61-57 with 2:14 to play. Caldwell was able to come back and tie the game on Jones' basket with seven seconds left, but Rousseau's late free throws doomed the Cougars.
Leedham finished with 17 points and Jones, pictured, had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists to pace Caldwell. Felix (17 rebounds) and freshman center Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) (10 rebounds) helped the Cougars hold a 47-39 edge in rebounding for the game. Felix and Leedham, who tallied 23 points in Friday's 63-57 win over Assumption College, were named to the all-Tournament Team. Rousseau ended up with 19 points and Williams had 11 points and nine rebounds for Stonehill, which was picked to finish third in the Northeast-10 Conference this season.
Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference game at Cheyney University on Tuesday, Nov. 23, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
