CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team fell to Wilmington University, 1-0 in a tight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The loss drops the Cougars to 8-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the Wildcats (12-3) remain unbeaten in the CACC at 10-0.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie well into the second half. Then in the 76th minute, Angelica Appold sent a pass from the right side into the penalty area to Samantha Simpson. Simpson hit a shot from 15 yards out that beat Caldwell sophomore goalkeeper Kristina Cabales (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) to her right for a 1-0 Wilmington lead. The Cougars were unable to net the equalizer the rest of the way to suffer their first CACC defeat in their past five conference games.
Cabales finished with six saves for Caldwell, which held a slim 12-11 advantage in shots for the game. Wilmington goalkeeper Amanda Walters registered four saves for the shutout.
Caldwell plays a non-conference game at the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday, Oct. 26, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
