WATERBURY, Conn. - Freshman guard
Torey Jones (N. Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) registered 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Post University, 70-54 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night in the Drubner Center. The Cougars pick up their first CACC win to improve to 1-2 in the league while evening their overall record at 5-5. The Eagles fall to 3-8 overall, 0-4 CACC.
Caldwell never trailed in the game, using a 17-2 run to take a 22-6 advantage midway through the first half. The lead grew to as many as 19 points before Post closed out the first half with a 13-7 run that cut the Cougars' lead to 13, 36-23 at the halftime break. Junior guard
Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) scored 10 points for Caldwell in the half, as the Cougars tallied 18 points off 16 Eagles turnovers.
Two three-pointers from Jones sparked an 11-4 Caldwell spree over the first three minutes of the second half for a 47-27 bulge. Mallorie Michalak answered with a three of her own, but that's as close as the Eagles would get until the final moments of the game. The Cougars never lost control of the game and led by as many as 25 points in the second half.
Jones was 4-of-5 from three-point range and made all six of her free throw attempts to record her third 20-pont game and second double-double this season. Leedham turned in an excellent all-around game with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Freshman forward
Ebony Thomas (Jersey City, NJ/Marist), pictured, scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Michalak led Post with 14 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.
Caldwell hosts Felician College on Thursday, Jan. 7 in another CACC clash. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start in the George R. Newman Center.
