CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team recorded a season-high hitting percentage of .316 en route to a three-set sweep of Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Tuesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who won by scores of 25-6, 25-20 and 25-12, are now 7-9 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Eagles fall to 3-14, 3-3 CACC.
The Cougars started the match on fire, racking up 14 kills against no errors in a 25-6 first-set victory. Freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) had five kills and sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) tallied four as Caldwell dominated the set. In the second set, the Cougars led 16-10 before Post battled back to tie the score at 20-20. But after a side-out for Caldwell, junior Lauren Herzog (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) served the final four points for a 25-20 win. McDonough and sophomore middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) each had three kills in the set to lead the Cougars.
Caldwell had another strong offensive performance in the third set, recording 12 kills and three errors in 23 attempts for a .391 hitting percentage. The Cougars turned a slim 8-7 lead into a 20-10 advantage and cruised to its fifth win against a CACC North opponent. Roth and junior middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) notched three kills apiece in the final set.
McDonough, pictured, finished with a team-best nine kills to go with 10 digs, while Alao had seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Roth dished out 26 assists and served three aces while tallying seven kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Herzog served up three aces without a service error, and freshman libero Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, KY/Bishop Moore) led the defense with 12 digs. Post was led by Brieonna Skipper, who had four kills.
The Cougars play their next six matches on the road, beginning with a CACC clash at Concordia College on Thursday, Oct. 1. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
