CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) had a team-high nine kills to lead the Caldwell College volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Tuesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The victory, which came in the Cougars' first conference and home match of the season, gives Caldwell an overall record of 3-6. The Lady Deacons fall to 0-7, 0-2 CACC with the loss.
Bloomfield took control of the first set, leading by as many as eight points. Caldwell made its push with seven straight points to tie the set at 19-19. The Lady Deacons managed to take leads of 22-20 and 23-22, but the Cougars scored the final three points to take the set, 25-23. Sophomore middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) had four kills in the set, including the final point. The second set also was close throughout, but Caldwell scored four of the final six points to take the set, 25-19. Junior middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) recorded three kills to pace the Cougars.
The Lady Deacons registered 13 kills in the third set, including five from Ursula Pereira. But it was not enough to hold off Caldwell, which received five kills from McDonough en route to a 25-20 win. McDonough also tallied 10 digs, marking the ninth time this season she has recorded 10 or more digs in a match. Alao finished with seven kills and seven total blocks, while Francois, right, had six kills. Sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) dished out 27 assists, junior outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) had five blocks and freshman libero Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, KY/Bishop Moore) notched a team-high 12 digs. Pereira finished with a match-high 14 kills for Bloomfield.
The Cougars face another CACC North Division foe in Dominican College on Thursday, Sept. 17. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
