PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - An 18-foot jumper by junior forward Matt Cohen (Forked River, NJ/Manasquan) as time expired allowed the Caldwell College men's basketball team to defeat the University of the Sciences, 53-51 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Morgan Arena Saturday afternoon. The victory moves the Cougars to 6-3 in league play and evens their overall record at 10-10 on the season. The Devils fall to 7-14, 5-6 CACC.
With the game tied at 51-51, senior guard Carl Augustin (Stony Point, NY/Don Bosco) missed a three-pointer with five seconds on the clock. Curtis Fitch grabbed the rebound and the Devils called a timeout. On the inbounds play, Fitch's pass was knocked away at half court by Augustin towards Cohen, who took a couple dribbles and buried an 18-footer as the final horn sounded. The buzzer-beater represented Cohen's only two points of the contest.
The Devils built a 19-10 lead over the first 10 minutes of the first half before Caldwell received two threes from freshman guard Malcolm Austin (Albany, NY/Christian Brothers Acad.) and another by sophomore guard Dante Rollins (East Orange, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) to help put the Cougars ahead 23-21. Following a pair of baskets by USP's Jarrod Frazier, a three-pointer by junior guard John Reed (Wall, NJ/Wall) gave the Cougars a halftime lead of 26-25.
Fitch scored the first basket of the second half as USP built a seven-point lead, 39-32 with 12:32 remaining. Caldwell eventually tied the game at 43-43 on an Augustin three-pointer at the 7:31 mark. The lead would change hands four times over the next three minutes, with the Cougars taking a 49-47 advantage with a three from Rollins. Following another basket by Rollins, Adewale Adefemi tied the game with back-to-back baskets to make the score 51-51 and set up Cohen's dramatic finish.
The Cougars hit eight three-pointers for the game, including three from Austin, who scored a team-best 12 points. Rollins finished with 10 points, while junior guard Eddie Crockett (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) registered eight rebounds and five assists. Frazier tallied a game-high 19 points to lead the Devils, who received 10 points, five boards and five assists from Adefemi.
