CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) registered 16 kills and 11 digs to lead the Caldwell College volleyball team to a three-set victory over Nyack College, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Thursday night in the George R. Newman Center. With the win, the Cougars sweep the season series with Nyack and improve to 13-11 overall and 11-3 in the conference. The Warriors fall to 8-7, 7-6 CACC.
Six kills by McDonough helped the Cougars hang on to win the first set, 25-23. In the second set, Caldwell used a run of six straight points to break open a close battle and lead 22-14 en route to a 25-17 victory. McDonough and junior outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) each tallied four kills to pace the Cougars. Caldwell jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set, but the Warriors fought back to make the score 12-11 Cougars. Three consecutive points put Caldwell ahead 15-11, and the Warriors never got closer than three points after that. McDonough's six kills helped the Cougars hit .303 for the set with 15 team kills and five errors in 33 attempts.
McDonough's 16 kills and 11 digs mark the eighth double-double this season for the freshman. Sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) dished out 33 assists and had four service aces, while Pecora and junior outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) delivered seven kills apiece. Freshman libero Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, KY/Bishop Moore) sparked the defense with a team-best 14 digs. Nyack's Brianne Cercone led the Warriors with eight kills, while Colleen Weidman had 17 digs.
The Cougars play another CACC home game on Saturday, Oct. 24, against the University of the Sciences. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
