PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College volleyball team fell to Philadelphia University in three sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Monday night at the Gallagher Center. With the loss, the Cougars drop to 11-11 on the season, including a 9-3 mark in conference play. The Rams improve to 24-4, 12-2 CACC.
Caldwell trailed by as many as eight points in the first set before cutting the deficit to 19-17 on a service ace by freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline). But Philadelphia tallied six of the final eight points to take the set and a 1-0 lead. The second set was close until the Rams reeled off seven straight points to break a 10-10 tie en route to a 25-17 win.
Philadelphia took a commanding 15-4 advantage in the third set, but the Cougars responded with a 10-1 run to make the score 16-14 Rams. Junior defensive specialist Kathleen Estes (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) had two service aces in the run. Caldwell still trailed by two points, 20-18, before the Rams finished off the match with five of the next seven points. The contest was a rematch of last year's CACC Tournament semifinal, won by Philadelphia in four sets.
McDonough, who had four kills in the final set, recorded team highs of nine kills and 14 digs to pace the Cougars. Sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay), pictured, tallied 21 assists and 10 digs, while freshman libero Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, KY/Bishop Moore) had 12 digs. Nicole Berkstresser and Danielle Carney each had eight kills for Philadelphia. Cindy Adams and Natalie Amodei registered 19 digs apiece.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they host Felician College in a CACC match. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
