PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College volleyball team took three out of four sets to down Holy Family University, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center. The victory lifts the Cougars above .500 for the first time this season at 10-9, including an 8-1 mark in conference play. The Tigers drop to 8-16, 6-4 CACC.
Caldwell fell behind late in the first set and trailed 23-19. On the verge of losing the set, the Cougars tallied the final six points and earned a 25-23 comeback victory. Sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) served five straight points down the stretch and had two aces, including the set-clinching point. Freshman outside hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline) recorded four kills to lead Caldwell to a 25-18 win in the second set.
Holy Family tallied 15 kills, including six from Katie Hornback, to win the third set 25-23. But the Cougars would not be denied in the fourth set, as Caldwell built a 16-7 lead en route to a 25-16 win. McDonough led the way with five more kills in the final set. The victory was Caldwell's third over Holy Family this season.
McDonough, pictured, finished with 14 kills and 17 digs to lead the Cougars in both categories, while junior outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) had a season-high 11 kills. Roth recorded 30 assists and three aces. Sophomore middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) registered eight blocks and junior outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.) had six blocks to help the Cougars tally 13 total team blocks. Hornback had 12 kills to pace the Tigers.
The Cougars' next opponent is Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The CACC match begins at 7:30 p.m. in Bloomfield, N.J.
