BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team lost a non-conference match to the University of Bridgeport, 5-0 Thursday night at Knights Field. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Purple Knights, ranked 20th in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division II national rankings, remain unbeaten at 7-0-3.
Bridgeport took control of the game early and scored four times in the first half. Elin Svavarsdottir opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest, then assisted on the next three Purple Knights' goals. Linda Velaj scored in the 22nd minute, followed by Leah Gallie in the 33rd minute and Sofia Hoflin in the 44th minute. Velaj tallied her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute off an assist from Hoflin. The Purple Knights held a 30-6 advantage in shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristen Cabales (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) started in goal for Caldwell and played the first half, making three saves. Junior Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell) played the entire second half and also registered three saves. Emelie Karstrom and Jillian Atwood split time in goal for Bridgeport and combined to make five saves for the shared shutout.
Caldwell returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they play at Wilmington University. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. in New Castle, Del.
