FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's soccer team failed to pick up its first win of the season on Wednesday, losing to Queens College 3-1 in a non-conference game. The loss is the Cougars' sixth straight to begin the season, while the Knights improve to 3-1.
The Cougars started well, taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) in the ninth minute. Rinks, pictured, headed home a corner kick by fellow senior Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester). But the lead didn't last long, as Andrea Slavin scored in the 12th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained knotted until Katherine Colon notched the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute. Slavin added an insurance goal in the 69th minute for her second tally of the game. Queens' Melissa Cuartas had two assists in the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell) recorded four saves in 72 minutes of action in goal. Freshman Victoria Cesaro (Owings, MD/St. Mary's) made her collegiate goalkeeping debut and made one save in 18 minutes. Crystal Butler was credited with four saves for Queens.
Next up for Caldwell is a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up with Felician College on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The game is set to start at 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
