PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game at Pace University, 65-53 on the first day of the Setters' tournament Monday night at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The result gives the Cougars an overall record of 4-5 on the season, while the host Setters improve to 5-3.
Pace took control of the game with a 15-4 run midway through the first half that put the Setters on top, 23-13 with 5:17 left in the half. A three-pointer by Laura Mooney just before the end of the first period allowed Pace to take a 29-18 advantage into the break. Caldwell struggled to score, making just 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) from the field in the first half.
Caldwell cut the deficit to nine early in the second half on a conventional three-point play by sophomore guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) that made the score 34-25 with 16:43 remaining. But that's as close as the Cougars would get, as the Setters' lead would expand to as many as 19 points. Caldwell forced 28 Pace turnovers and had 14 steals, but could not overcome poor shooting, making 25.0 percent for the game.
Senior forward Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic), pictured, led all players with 18 points to go with seven rebounds. Leedham finished with 16 points, while freshman guard Kaitlyn Lambert (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) registered 12 points, seven boards and five steals. For the Setters, Brittany Shields tallied 11 points, 16 rebounds and three steals, and Shiesha McCollum scored a team-best 12 points.
The Cougars continue play at the Pace University Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 30 with a game against the University of New Haven at 2:00 p.m.
