NYACK, N.Y. - Just one season after finishing in last place, the Caldwell College volleyball team clinched the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division regular-season title with Thursday's four-set victory at Nyack College. The Cougars (17-9 overall), who won by scores of 19-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-17, improve to 13-3 in conference play and are two games ahead of second-place Bloomfield College with one match remaining. The Warriors, who are in fourth place in the CACC North, fall to 6-24 overall, 5-11 CACC.
Caldwell received 10 kills from freshman right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) and 18 assists from freshman setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay), as the Cougars completed a season sweep of Nyack. Defensively, Roth added 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, while senior outside hitter Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech), pictured, also had 14 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) and freshman middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) tallied four blocks apiece. For Nyack, Laurie Stuart had nine kills and 17 digs, while Samantha Friday dished out 30 assists.
Now in its third year, the Caldwell College volleyball program, coached by Megan Hrbek, turned in a combined record of 4-41 in its first two seasons. Last year, the Cougars went 4-24 and finished sixth out of six teams after a winless campaign in its inaugural season in 2006. By finishing atop the division standings this season, Caldwell earns the No. 1 seed in the North and will host a quarterfinal match in the CACC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 11, against Nyack, which has locked up fourth place in the North Division.
The Cougars, who have won nine of their past 10 matches, host Philadelphia University on Saturday, Nov. 8 in the final regular-season match. The first serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
