CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team outlasted a persistent Nyack College squad in four sets in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The victory allows the Cougars (18-10), seeded first in the North Division, to advance to Friday's semifinal round, where they will face Philadelphia University. The fourth-seeded Warriors finish their season with a record of 6-26. Caldwell won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 28-30, 25-20.
Sophomore outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) helped the Cougars hold off Nyack in the first set with six kills and a .600 hitting percentage. The second set was close down the stretch until a pair of kills by freshman right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) and a service ace from freshman setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) gave Caldwell a 25-18 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The teams battled back and forth in the third set, with neither side able to gain the upper hand. The Cougars used kills by Roth, sophomore outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.), Mosher and Roesing to set up match point four times. But kills by Laurie Stuart and Megan Metcalf lifted the Warriors to a 30-28 victory in the match's most exciting set.
The fourth set also remained close until a pair of kills by freshman middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and a service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Herzog (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) helped Caldwell grab a 22-17 advantage. Mosher took over from there, recording the Cougars' final three points on kills to clinch the set 25-20 and the match. The victory came in Caldwell's first CACC Tournament match since the program was re-established in 2006. It was also the third time the Cougars defeated the Warriors this season.
Roesing, pictured, tallied her first double-double of the year with a season-best 13 kills and 14 digs to pace the Cougars. Mosher and Alao finished with 12 and 10 digs, respectively, while Roth dished out 40 assists to go with six kills and 10 digs. Sophomore libero Kathleen Estes (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) tallied 21 digs to lead all players. For Nyack, Stuart had a match-high 14 kills, and Samantha Friday recorded 38 assists.
The Cougars will play Philadelphia, the No. 3 seed in the South, in Friday's semifinal match at Georgian Court University. The match is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
