CALDWELL, N.J. - A goal by senior midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) in the 102nd minute lifted the Caldwell College women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. Rinks' tally gives the Cougars an overall record of 2-6-1, including a 2-1-1 mark in the conference, while the Chargers (3-6-1, 2-1-1 CACC) suffered their first CACC loss of the season.
Just over a minute into the second overtime period, senior midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) crossed the ball from the right flank to Rinks in front of the Chargers' goal. Rinks buried a shot into the left side of the goal to end the game in Caldwell's favor. It was Rinks' third goal of the season and the third game-winner of her career.
Rinks began the play that led to Caldwell's first goal of the game, when her pass sent senior forward Kim Fenton (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) down the left side. Fenton centered the ball to Paknis, who scored from eight yards out for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Dominican tied the game up later in the first half, when Rosa Centurion headed home a corner kick from Shannon Harding in the 21st minute. The game remained tied until Rinks' heroics in double overtime.
Caldwell peppered the Dominican goal, out-shooting the Chargers 25-5 for the game. Dominican goalkeeper Valentina Sturchio recorded 14 saves to keep the game close, while sophomore netminder Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell) made two saves for Caldwell.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, with another CACC battle at Goldey-Beacom College. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. in Wilmington, Del.
