PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College volleyball team won a pair of matches at the University of the Sciences on Saturday at Morgan Arena, defeating the host Devils 3-2 before downing Concordia College 3-2. The two wins give the Cougars an overall record of 11-8, while the victory over USP improves Caldwell's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference mark to 7-2.
The Cougars dropped the first set against USP 25-18 before taking the next two sets by the scores of 25-21 and 25-22. On the verge of taking the match in the fourth set, the Cougars were unable to close it out as the Devils won 28-26 to force a fifth and deciding set. It was all Caldwell, however, as the Cougars cruised to a 15-2 fifth-set victory to defeat the Devils for the second time this season. The two teams battled to a five-set match in a non-conference match on Sept. 13, with Caldwell prevailing.
Freshman right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) led all players with 19 kills, while middle blockers Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) recorded 14 and 11 kills respectively. Freshman setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) had 40 assists to go with 12 digs for her third double-double of the season. Defensively, sophomore Kathleen Estes (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst), pictured, tallied a career-high 38 digs, with Alao and Francois recording five blocks apiece. The Cougars set a new school record with 97 digs.
Against Concordia, the Cougars trailed two sets to one before taking the fourth set 25-12. Caldwell outlasted the Clippers in the fifth set, 15-13 to capture their second win of the day. Roth set a new career best with 45 assists, while Francois led the offense with 12 kills. On the defensive side of the net, Alao had a career-high eight total blocks, with senior Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) recording 18 digs.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 21 with a CACC match at Felician College. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Lodi, N.J.
