ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell College volleyball team defeated Dominican College in three sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Hennessy Center Thursday evening. The win completes the series sweep of Dominican for the Cougars (9-8 overall, 6-2 CACC), who beat the Chargers 3-1 on Sept. 17 earlier this season.
The victory also sets a program record for wins in a season, topping the 1990 squad that went 8-10. Caldwell discontinued its volleyball program after the 1991 season before re-establishing the program in 2006.
In the first set, the Cougars had to hold off Dominican despite holding a 19-8 lead at one point. The Chargers battled back to make the score 23-21 Caldwell, but a pair of kills by freshman middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) gave the Cougars the first set. Caldwell held the upper hand in the second set, 20-10 before the hosts came back again with six straight points to cut the deficit to 20-16. But the Cougars held on to take the second set 25-20. The roles reversed in the third set, with Dominican leading early before the Cougars gained control. With the score 17-13 in favor of the Chargers, Caldwell tallied six of the next seven points for a 19-18 lead. In the end, the Cougars took advantage of four Dominican errors down the stretch and a kill by freshman right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) to win the set and the match.
Mosher finished with a game-high eight kills, while sophomore middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) tallied seven kills. Freshman setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay), pictured, recorded 26 assists as the Cougars put down 30 kills in the match. Defensively, senior outside hitter Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) had 16 digs, while Alao had four solo blocks. Ashley Simpson had seven kills to pace Dominican.
Next up for the Cougars is a tri-match at the University of the Sciences on Saturday, October 18 in Philadelphia, Pa. Caldwell plays the host Devils at 12:00 p.m. in a CACC match before taking on Concordia College in a non-conference contest at 2:00 p.m.
